Spring 2021 Week 8 Preview

As we inch ever closer to conference tournament time, the final chance for teams to secure the best possible seeding is approaching rapidly. Whilst some teams are looking to charge towards the top seed, others are just trying to sneak their way into the tournament. However, in both scenarios, picking up points is becoming more and more crucial as the weeks wear on.

It seems to be a regular theme lately, and once again the Aussies face off in the Atlantic 10 as Teresa Morrissey’s Rhode Island side take on Hannah Peric and Massachusetts in a game that doubles as a battle of two of the tallest Aussies in NCAA Division I. Morrissey has been rotating games with local freshman Faith Hutchins, but if the pattern of recent games continues, the sophomore will be between the sticks for this contest between two teams with contrasting fortunes but in equal need of a victory. Peric and the Minutewomen sit just two points adrift of the conference lead, whilst Rhode Island sit just back from a congested mid-table pack where a single win could see a team jump two or three places in the Atlantic 10 standings.

Staying in the Atlantic 10, Alyssa Van Heurck has been in solid form in recent times, capping off an outstanding few weeks with a goal against Saint Joseph’s, and will now seek to increase La Salle’s winning streak to three games against Fordham. The Explorers have a decent history against Fordham, winning four of the last five games against the Rams, but the teams have not faced off since Fordham’s 1-0 home win in 2018. But with Fordham sitting winless through their three games this season, La Salle will fancy their chances of victory and Van Heurck will no doubt be eyeing off another goal or assist to help them get there.

Grace Norbury picked up an assist on Senior Day, and will now look to help Alabama State maintain their unbeaten record in the SWAC. It won’t be easy against league leaders Prairie View A&M, with the trip to face the Panthers as well as Texas Southern having a reputation as a difficult trip for all SWAC teams. Norbury has become something of a fulcrum in midfield even at this early stage in her career, becoming increasingly crucial to the Hornets’ successes. Look also for Sophie Bui to come off the bench to provide an impact as Alabama State attempt to make a run at top spot in the conference before heading home to play Alabama A&M in the in-state derby next week.
