Spring 2021 Week 8 Wrap

Hannah Peric once again stepped up in a crucial moment, rounding out another solid performance with an assist on the match-winning goal as Massachusetts knocked off Saint Joseph’s in a nail-biter. With time winding down into the final ten minutes and neither side able to find a goal, Peric was able to find teammate Jenny Hipp with a well-positioned header, who managed to fire home for the game’s only goal. Peric then backed up against Rhode Island as a sterling defensive performance saw the Minutewomen hold their opponents to just two shots on target before securing victory with a goal early in the second period of overtime.

Of course, Teresa Morrissey was also involved in that game, and despite conceding two overtime winners this week, kept her Rhode Island team in both of their games this week. The sophomore played 64 minutes in a 2-1 loss to Fordham, coming off the bench at halftime and making one save, and was elevated to the starting role against Massachusetts. Coming up with four saves, Morrissey kept the Rams in the game against the Minutewomen, but once again overtime proved Rhode Island’s downfall in a 1-0 defeat.

Alabama State marched into Texas and took six points to sit top of the SWAC alongside Grambling State, with Grace Norbury once again quite literally in the middle of things for the Hornets. The freshman played 74 minutes against Prairie View A&M before taking an opponent’s studs to the knees and being forced from the pitch, before the Hornets grabbed the game’s only goal in the 83rd minute. Norbury would return for Sunday’s match against Texas Southern, this time playing the full 90 minutes as Alabama State dominated but required an 84th minute penalty following a tangle at a corner to secure victory.

Staying in Texas, Madison McComasky put in an inspired performance for Incarnate Word as the Cardinals routed Nicholls State 6-0. The junior college transfer was instrumental in ensuring the Cardinals dominated the midfield battle on their way to a comprehensive victory, also rattling off four shots with one on target. Incarnate Word now sit fourth in the Southland Conference with three games to play, seven points off leaders Lamar but just a point shy of third-placed Stephen F. Austin, with both teams facing tricky but not impossible runs home.
