2024 NCAA Division I Week 3 Wrap

Towson forward Courtney Butlion was only on the pitch for 27 minutes against Delaware State, but that was all the time she needed to make an impact as the Tigers rolled to a 9-0 victory. Butlion won a penalty in the 14th minute, and although her shot from 11 metres was saved, the rebound was cleaned up by a teammate to put the Tigers 1-0 up. The Western Australian then turned the ball home from a corner just six minutes later to double her side’s lead, and with Towson outshooting Delaware State 33-3, and the Hornets only putting one on target for the entire game, the game was as good as complete when Towson went 3-0 up after 35 minutes. The Tigers then hosted Florida for their second game of the weekend, with Butlion rattling off another two shots on target in 58 minutes of action as the match finished 1-1 to leave Towson sitting at 2-2-2 through three weeks.

Mercedes McNabb has been an inspired addition to the UNC Asheville lineup, and this week added a first career assist to go with the goal she scored against Western Carolina in Week 1. With the Bulldogs attempting to finish a comeback against Jacksonville State after conceding the opener after just eight minutes, McNabb’s ball into the box was finished by Ava Bjorkman-Tracy to put UNC Asheville up 2-1 after Karlee Benz had scored the equaliser just after the hour mark. Like Butlion, McNabb remained a threat in her team’s second game of the week, tallying a pair of shots with one on target in 66 minutes of action as the Bulldogs drew 1-1 with VMI on Sunday.

Although Fresno State split their games against Montana and Seattle this week, Shivani Battaglia continued her good form between the sticks for the Bulldogs. The former Seminole State shotstopper came up massive in her team’s 2-1 win over Montana as both teams finished with six shots on target, but Battaglia racked up five saves to ensure an 81st minute Olimpico for Fresno State was enough to split the teams. Although the Bulldogs fell to a 1-0 defeat in their second game of the week against Seattle, Battaglia’s four saves played a large part in keeping her side in the game as the Bulldogs tallied only four shots on target.

Of course, it would be remiss not to mention the Bay State battle between Massachusetts and Harvard as Hannah Peric and Erin Gordon faced off. The scoreline would not have been the neutrals’ first choice, but with an Australian playing the full 90 minutes in defence for each side, the 0-0 scoreline did fans on this side of Pacific just fine. The teams were limited to a combined five shots on target for the contest, as UMass finished with three of those. Harvard now sit at 1-0-1 after two games, whilst Massachusetts rounded out their weekend with a 2-1 win over Boston College to sit 2-2-1 after coming away with two wins and a draw from what is probably the toughest three-game stretch of the regular season. Peric has now played the full 90 minutes in all bar one game this season as the Manly United product looks to secure another College Matildas Defensive Player of the Year award.
